A never ending attraction for Rafael is breathing life into ordinary visual cliches. The way light hits a surface, a subtle glow, a cast shadow or a glimpse of form and color that borders on abstraction. He goes beyond just accepting imperfection by honoring it with his personal interpretations. His painting style is what one might call representational impressionism. Rafael is also thrilled by plain-air painting along our coast and throughout the southwest.
Rafael is a seasoned painter of landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and figures. Photography has always been an essential tool for him and although he uses it mainly for painting reference, his photographs are exceptional. Rafael has had a successful career working in Silicon Valley as an art director and graphic designer for the last 30 years. He is now back to his roots, painting full-time again. He conducts workshops and gives demonstrations locally as well as in his studio in San Carlos, and is currently accepting portrait commissions. He’s a member of the Pacific Art League, the Santa Cruz Art League, the Santa Clara Watercolor Association, the Atherton Arts Foundation, and the Sequoia Art Group.
Rafael’s work can also be seen on his website.
