Stephen Schendel was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and graduated from Eden Prairie High School. His father was the art director of a large Minneapolis advertising agency and eventually founded his own firm which specialized in product design. Stephen took drawing lessons at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts starting at the age of nine and continued art training with his father. He graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield Minnesota with a BA and worked in the commercial art field for 10 years becoming the art director for the firm.
Stephen also had a strong interest in science and continued his education obtaining both dental and medical degrees. Combining his interest in art and science, he became a plastic and maxillofacial surgeon specializing in facial reconstruction.
Because of his background in both art and surgery, he was asked by fellow plastic surgeons to teach sculpture to surgeons. He thus taught sculpting to plastic surgeons over a number of years. During his active surgical career, he has continued painting and exhibiting.
Peter’s work has been accepted to the prestigious Birds in Art competition, Nasau, Wisconsin, the Montana Watercolor Association, and the California Art club among other venues.
He now lives in Menlo Park California where he is Emeritus Professor of Surgery and former Chairman of Plastic Surgery at Stanford University.
